Preparing Skins

The following guidelines can be used to assist with skin preparation:

  • Do not leave the animal in the sun
  • Skin the animal as soon as possible
  • Ensure all excess fat and meat is removed and the blood and dirt is washed off
  • Do not drag the animal over the ground
  • When loading the animal on a vehicle, make sure there are enough hands to help
  • The hide can be soaked in a salt and bactericide solution overnight
  • 20kg salt / 100l of water and 50ml dettol per 100l of water Once the skin is removed it must be well salted on the flesh side and left in the sun – flesh side up to dry
  • If the above (soaking) is not possible, then salt the skin well on the flesh side, (ensure the entire skin is covered well with salt) and leave in the sun to dry. Quantity of salt used should be equal to the weight of the skin
  • If there is no time to dry the skin, it must be well salted, rolled up and then dried out at your final destination
  • Make sure when the animal is skinned that no holes are cut in the skin
  • Ensure that once your animal is skinned, mark it clearly to ensure you don’t received someone else’s skin

Please follow the above guidelines to help us to provide you with a better quality product.
